Police > History

Records from the first council showed that Joe White was the Village Marshal in December of 1900.The Village had only 439 residents and little crime to worry about. Village records are sparse as it pertains to police history until 1939 when “Pop” Fish was appointed Village Marshal.

After a 1941 Ohio Attorney General’s Opinion, the designation of Village Marshal was changed to Chief of Police. In the 1950’s the Ohio Highway Patrol trained Amelia Police Officers and assisted Mayor Robert Groh in establishing a Mayors Court in his East Main Street home.

Village Marshals/Chief’s of Police worked out of their homes prior to the construction of our current Municipal Building.  In 1957 the Village purchased it’s first new police car.

I would like to thank our former Mayor Robert Groh, and the Amelia Historical Society for taking the time to preserve what is known about our police department’s history.  As Chief of Police, I feel it is not only important to plan for our future, but also explore where we have been. As time permits, I would like to compile a list of the former Chief’s of Police and the dates they served, along with photographs and other important historical information about the Amelia Police Department, so that our history is preserved and available on our website.
